Dear Antique Expert,
I am so dazed and confused. I recently saw an advertisement that a company would pay me top dollar for my gold and silver, so I bit. I had inherited my family’s sterling silver flatware set, and I was never going to use it, so I decided to take advantage. Boy was I shocked when I got nowhere near what I felt I should have gotten. Can you please explain?
Dear dazed and confused Silver Seller,
First you have to understand something about weights and measures of precious metals and then how precious metals are valuated.
Weights and measures
It seems a bit confusing and even somewhat dishonest, but this is how it is until we better regulated and standardize our system. I hope this has helped you understand the pitfalls of selling precious metals.
